Orbital Training teaches you the mission-specific skills you need to live and work in space to ensure you, your crew, and your entire launch team enjoys a safe and memorable flight.
Each week can be taken independently. All weeks must be taken within one year for certification.
Orbital training begins with understanding the fundamentals and the science behind orbital spaceflight. In Week 1 you will receive a baseline medical assessment and comprehensively learn about the space environment, mission design, orbital mechanics and start to familiarize yourself with orbital vehicles and their systems.
Week 2 is dedicated to human physiology in space. By the end of the week, you will have learned the science behind how and why your body reacts to space travel and acquired techniques for coping with the adverse effects of spaceflight. You will conduct training to condition your body for launch and re-entry acceleration forces and study and simulate nominal and off nominal orbital mission flight profiles. In addition, you will be able to practice a sequence of mission events in a zero-gravity environment and fulfill a sequence of real life in-space scenarios.
This week is focused on learning essential skills for living in space. You will acquire key skills to ensure your teams health and safety while in space and learn about the vehicle systems that support health and hygiene in space (such as the space toilet and shower!), food preparation, space to ground communications, fitness in space, and more. You will learn essential first aid techniques and practice scenarios that could occur on ascent, re-entry and in orbit.
Spaceflight has become routine, but you still prepare for all eventualities. In week 4 you will learn about emergency scenarios, rescue, and survival operation procedures then practice range of off-nominal mission scenarios. Trainees undergo land and water rescue and survival training so that you and your crew are confidently prepared for every situation.
In week 5 you deep dive into vehicle systems, suits, and gear. Learn about important spacecraft systems such as the environmental control and life support system, the propulsion system, and the electrical power system so that you are familiar with the operating concepts and impact on mission performance. Become intimately familiar with your space suit and its basic operation and subsystems as well as studying the other equipment that you will use on your space journey.
Week 6 builds upon Week 5 and gets into specific vehicle operations during the different phases of flight: launch, on-orbit and re-entry. You will finish your week by rehearsing scenarios and mission events while in your spacecraft simulator complete with space suit and communication with mission control. These mission rehearsals are the culmination of six intense weeks of astronaut training. Celebrate your accomplishment with your friends and family at the graduation ceremony and after party at the Orbite Yacht Club!
